Getting A Handle On Malpractice Liability Insurance

In every type of business that provides products or services there is the chance that the company may be sued for a wide variety of reasons. These include injury or damage to property done on the premises or by the product or property, right down to giving an inaccurate diagnosis to a patient.

Especially these days people are quick to sue, but with some of the problems that can arise and the enormous costs they entail, it’s no wonder that people go looking for compensation from those responsible for the circumstances which caused the injury or damage. However, this can pose a very serious problem for the other party.

Liability insurance covers these types of claims, but malpractice liability insurance is a bit more specific. For most of us the very term “malpractice” conjures up thoughts of surgeons botching major operations or doctors giving bad advice, but there is much more to malpractice suits than that.

Of course the medical profession is a big one when it comes to malpractice, but it is also very common for dentist, attorneys and other professionals to be sued. Even schools have malpractice liability insurance. This will cover suits filed for injuries sustained by students while under the care of a teacher.

Malpractice liability insurance even covers such suits as those filed against a company for employment discrimination! There are so many different things that constitute “malpractice” that this type of insurance is needed by more and more types of businesses and individuals.

As with other types of insurance, you choose a policy that covers you for a certain amount per incident. For example, you may be covered for $50,000 per incident, up to three times a year for a total of $150,000, or 50,000/150,000. In order to know how much coverage you should get you need to understand your risk and be well educated about what the insurance will do for you and how high costs can go.

Another thing to know about this insurance is that it is much like other types of insurance. If you use your malpractice liability insurance three times a year, it is most likely going to cost you significantly more the next year, in the same way you pay more for your auto insurance if you are in a large accident or a number of accidents. It is the way insurance companies have of protecting themselves when it becomes apparent that there is a good chance they will have to pay out again.

Once you find a good policy you can pay on a monthly basis or quarterly, semi-annually or just once a year. Although this type of insurance is quite expensive, it is worth it for the peace of mind it gives when you go to work every day.
